Safeguarding is the process of protecting children from harm. It is a responsibility that all adults have, but it is particularly important for those who work in education. Schools and other educational settings are places where children should feel safe and supported. However, all too often, they are the places where children are most at risk of harm.

In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile safeguarding incidents in education. These incidents have shocked and horrified the public, and they have led to calls for a transformation of safeguarding practices. In response, the government has introduced a number of new measures to improve safeguarding in education. These measures include:

  • A new statutory safeguarding code of practice for schools and colleges
  • Increased funding for safeguarding training for teachers and other staff
  • The establishment of a new national safeguarding panel to advise the government on safeguarding policy

These measures are a welcome step in the right direction. However, there is still much more that needs to be done to transform safeguarding in education. One of the most important lessons that we have learned from safeguarding incidents is that we need to do more to listen to children. Children are often the best judges of their own safety, and they should be given a voice in safeguarding decisions.

We also need to do more to create a culture of safeguarding in education. This means that all staff need to be aware of their safeguarding responsibilities, and they need to feel confident in reporting any concerns that they have. It also means that children need to be taught about safeguarding, so that they can protect themselves from harm.

Transforming safeguarding in education will not be easy, but it is essential. We owe it to our children to create a safe and supportive environment where they can learn and grow.

The Lessons We Have Learned

The following are some of the key lessons that we have learned from safeguarding incidents in education:

  • We need to do more to listen to children.
  • We need to create a culture of safeguarding in education.
  • We need to provide more training for staff on safeguarding.
  • We need to improve our systems for reporting and investigating safeguarding concerns.
  • We need to work together with parents and carers to keep children safe.

The Transformative Steps We Are Taking

The government is taking a number of steps to transform safeguarding in education. These steps include:

  • Introducing a new statutory safeguarding code of practice for schools and colleges.
  • Increasing funding for safeguarding training for teachers and other staff.
  • Establishing a new national safeguarding panel to advise the government on safeguarding policy.
  • Working with parents and carers to keep children safe.

These steps are a welcome step in the right direction. However, there is still much more that needs to be done. We all have a role to play in transforming safeguarding in education. By working together, we can create a safe and supportive environment for all children.

Safeguarding is a vital part of education. It is our responsibility to protect children from harm, and to create a safe and supportive environment where they can learn and grow. The lessons that we have learned from safeguarding incidents in education are invaluable. They have shown us that we need to do more to listen to children, to create a culture of safeguarding, and to provide more training for staff. The government is taking a number of steps to transform safeguarding in education, but there is still much more that needs to be done. We all have a role to play in creating a safe and supportive environment for all children.
