Born in Bielsko, Poland, in 1924, Gerda's childhood was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. In 1942, her family was rounded up and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Gerda and her parents endured unimaginable horrors, witnessing the deaths of countless loved ones.
In 1944, Gerda was separated from her parents and sent to a labor camp in Germany. She was liberated by American soldiers in 1945, weighing only 68 pounds. After the war, Gerda learned that her parents had perished in the Holocaust.
Devastated but determined to rebuild her life, Gerda immigrated to the United States in 1946. She married Kurt Klein, a fellow Holocaust survivor, and together they raised a family of three children. In 1957, Gerda published her memoir, "All But My Life," which became a powerful account of her experiences during the Holocaust.
Over the years, Gerda became a tireless advocate for Holocaust education and remembrance. She spoke to countless audiences, sharing her story and warning against the dangers of hatred and intolerance. In 1985, she founded the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation, which supports educational programs about the Holocaust and promotes interfaith dialogue.
Gerda's unwavering advocacy was recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. She also received honorary degrees from universities around the world.
Gerda Weissmann Klein's legacy is one of hope and resilience. Through her powerful testimonies and her tireless activism, she inspired countless individuals to confront the darkness of the past and to work towards a better future. Her story will continue to be told for generations to come, reminding us of the horrors that humans can inflict upon one another and the importance of fighting for peace and understanding.
