Plot
The film opens with a group of friends sitting around a table at a bar. They are all talking about the 2016 election, and they are all very different opinions. Some of them are strong supporters of Donald Trump, while others are strongly opposed to him. As the election draws closer, the friends begin to argue more and more about their political beliefs. They eventually come to a point where they are no longer able to talk to each other without getting into a fight.
The film then cuts to four years later. The friends are all still friends, but they have all been affected by the election in different ways. Some of them have become more political, while others have become more withdrawn. The film ends with the friends sitting around a table at a bar once again. They are still talking about the 2016 election, but they are now able to do so without getting into a fight.
Characters
- Matt Damon as Steve Rogers, a Trump supporter who is trying to make sense of the election.
- Julie Bowen as Sarah Wilson, a Clinton supporter who is trying to understand why so many people support Trump.
- Alec Baldwin as David Duke, a white supremacist who is trying to capitalize on the election to further his own agenda.
Themes
The Deplorables is a film about the 2016 election, but it is also a film about friendship. The film explores the ways in which politics can divide people, and it also explores the ways in which friendship can overcome those differences.
The film is also a satire of the political climate in the United States. The film exaggerates the behavior of both Trump supporters and Clinton supporters, and it uses humor to comment on the absurdity of the election.
Reception
The Deplorables received mixed reviews from critics. Some critics praised the film's satire and its performances, while others criticized the film's pacing and its lack of focus. The film was a box office bomb, grossing only $2 million against a production budget of $10 million.
Legacy
The Deplorables is a film that has been largely forgotten by the public. However, the film is still a valuable document of the 2016 election, and it offers a unique perspective on the political climate of the time.
